Un-Ballast

The Swedish Island of Lilla Norge was unintentionally formed through the mass dumping of ship ballast, driven by excessive timber extraction from the Boreal Forest in the North. The island is a place made up of many pieces of land from across the globe. Un-ballast transforms this forgotten wasteland into a collective island garden over the next 100 years, using geo-textile earth pillows and timber support structures to create a quilted landscape. The project rethinks the nature of the garden enclosure, while honouring the island’s strange, entangled history of displacement and ecological emergence.
